Harvard Forest Schoolyard Teachers present at the MA Environmental Education Society Conference

Harvard Forest Schoolyard Ecology Teachers "strut their stuff" at the Massachusetts Environmental Education Society Conference: MEES 2010: Bringing Environmental Education Home on Wednesday, March 3rd at the College of the Holy Cross. Award winning teachers, Jessica Greene and Kate Bennett will each lead separate workshops for conference attendees.

West Springfield Middle School teacher, Jessica Greene, will share the ways she integrates the Harvard Forest Buds, Leaves, and Global Warming science protocol into her middle school curricula. Workshop participants will see how she is able to facilitate students communicating their study findings in the form of scientific posters. 

J.R. Briggs Elementary School teacher, Kate Bennett and Nashua River Watershed Assoc., Environmental Education Director Mary Marro will present hands onecology based math lessons in a workshop entitled Math in the Field. These standards based lessons are suitable for outdoor settings such as schoolyards, woods, or nature trails. Participants will learn how to do plot studies for plant and insect diversity, graph temperatures and snow depths. Jessica and Kate have participated in the Harvard Forest LTER Schoolyard Ecology Program for the past five years. Kate has spent the last three summers working on ecological studies with Harvard Forest Scientists as part of the Research Education for Teachers (RET) program through LTER-NSF.
