New Book Highlights Harvard's Conservation Innovation
A new book edited by James Levitt, Director of the Harvard Forest Program on Conservation Innovation, describes the strategic role that colleges and universities play in conserving land, water, and wildlife habitat around the world. The book was launched today in a special session at the IUCN World Parks Congress in Sydney, Australia.
The book, Conservation Catalysts: The Academy as Nature's Agent, is freely downloadable as a .pdf from its publishers, the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy.
More than a dozen first-hand accounts in the book describe efforts from Nairobi to the Colorado River delta, that are protecting wildlife habitat, improving water quality, building sustainable economies, and creating better public amenities now and for the future. The book's opening chapter - co-written by six Harvard Forest authors - highlights Harvard's role in convening the regional Wildlands and Woodlands conservation initiative, which has influenced land policy and increased the pace of conservation across New England over the past ten years.
