Managing Hemlock Forests threatened by Hemlock Woolly Adelgid
Harvard Forest Ecologist David Orwig and Extension Forester David Kittredge from Umass-Amherst recently completed a fact sheet that reviews Hemlock Woolly Adelgid biology, silvicultural options, Best Management Practices, and considerations for making an informed decision about the future of hemlock stands. Many loggers, foresters, and woodland owners are facing decisions about their hemlock stands now or in the near future as the introduced adelgid spreads through the region. This new publication outlines a series of options and associated costs to consider for planning the appropriate management strategy for hemlock forests.
