Old Growth

Printer-friendly version

Old growth forests are forests that have never been directly altered by humans in the form of cutting, clearing or agricultural practices. They represent a rare component of the landscape of New England but have much to offer in terms of serving as ecological benchmarks of forest development and carbon stores, as well as providing detailed, multi-century disturbance legacies. They have been studied by many past and current researchers and are also an important component of Wildlands and Woodlands research.
