Beyond our model programs in Weston and Walden Woods, Sustainable Working Landscapes staff collaborate with a variety of similar research programs across New England:
- We coordinate our research protocols for long-term forest monitoring plots, deer exclosures, and grassland vegetation plots with those at Harvard Forest in Petersham, MA, and at Highstead in Redding, CT
- We have resampled forest inventory plots at Merck Family Forest in Rupert, VT, working with ecologist Kerry Woods from Bennington College
- We have resampled forest inventory plots at Blue Hills Foundation in Strafford, NH, working with Harvard Forest ecologists
- We have helped establish deer exclosures on watershed land of the town of Northampton, MA, and on conservation land of the town of Lexington, MA
- We have helped resample grassland vegetation plots at Appleton Farm in Ipswich, MA, working with ecologists from the Trustees of Reservations
We welcome others to join this network of research sites. Much of the work at the outset is establishing baselines—by having a wide range of sites following the same protocols for collecting data, we will be able to shed light on important questions such as forest change over time; change in deer populations and browse impact and response to management efforts; and maintaining populations of open-land species.
