Calorimetry Set-up
The thermocouple tip was placed just inside the upper orifice of the micro-bomb (Figure 3). The opening into the micro-bomb that accommodates the thermocouple is narrow and needs to be cleaned regularly (i.e., every 4-8 hours depending on sample type). Clogging from ash accumulation (Figure 2) reduces oxygen pressure in the bomb and leads to incomplete combustion. It is best to enlarge this opening to extend analysis time before cleaning is required. You may also sand the thermocouple sheath to increase the gap between the bomb opening and sheath. Do not enlarge excessively or heat from combustion may bypass the thermocouple sensor.
Teflon or Neoprene O-rings (size 22) can be used to seal the micro-bomb. Teflon lasts longer but are more difficult to seal air-tight. Some analysts have also used two Neoprene O-rings.
